Anthony Albanese has introduced new taxes in his government’s bad faith budget, despite him saying over 50 times that he wasn’t going to make changes to negative gearing, capital gains or trusts.
This is a fundamental betrayal of the trust that was given to the government at the last election.
He has introduced:
A new housing tax on capital gains.
A new rental tax on negative gearing - pushing up rents.
A new family savings tax on trusts.
He didn't take these taxes to the last election.
And he won't audit how many billions of our taxes have gone to CFMEU corruption.
His priorities need to change: Stop corruption with our taxes and take new taxes to an election.

We, the undersigned, oppose Anthony Albanese introducing new taxes he didn’t take to the last election, noting:
- At the last election Labor did not propose a new housing tax, rental tax or family savings tax.
- The government has made no efforts to reclaim billions flowing to the CFMEU and organised crime through fraud and corruption.
- Australians shouldn’t be hit with higher taxes just to fund fraud and corruption.
- Before the 2022 election, Anthony Albanese, said there would be “no changes” to superannuation.
- We need an economy where hard work pays off, not punishes work and savings.
Not the tax we voted for
When Australians voted at the last election they weren’t told about Labor’s new taxes on housing, rents and family savings.
Research shows only 49 per cent of Australians knew Labor was planning to introduce a family savings tax on unrealised capital gains in superannuation according to JWS research.[1]
Some voters were explicitly told this wasn’t Labor’s policy. In the Electorate of Deakin Labor’s candidate and now MP, Matt Gregg, told a Park Orchards Ratepayer’s Association meeting that it “is not Labor policy”.[2]
Even Labor MPs are saying Anthony Albanese shouldn’t increase taxes on honest Australians when they’re just going to fund dishonest corruption. [3]
What we know
Anthony Albanese is floating new taxes he didn’t take to the last election.
He didn’t tell us before the election, all we know is he’s looking at:
- A new housing tax by increasing capital gains tax, that could extend to the family home. [4]
- A new rental tax by increasing income tax for rental properties. [5]
- A new family savings tax by increasing income tax on income through trusts. [6]
- A new road tax on electric vehicles, but could be for all cars. [7]
We also know he won’t investigate how much of our taxes is going into the CFMEU with reports up to $30 billion has been lost to corruption. [8]
About
Not the tax we voted for is a campaign to hold Anthony Albanese and Labor MPs accountable for promising Australians one thing before they went to the ballot box, and breaking their word once they won.
The campaign is being led by the Shadow Treasurer, the Hon. Tim Wilson MP.
